Not long after releasing my last album, I began to have ideas about my next project. These stemmed from revisiting my love for synthesized sounds, which happened to coincide with a newfound interest in electronic music. As a sax player and improvisor I began to explore how an embrace of synths, including drums and bass, might be used to create a kind of textured grooving fabric over which sax-driven melodies might weave together in a thoughtful, conversational way. Where it seemed right, I used some guitar for comping or supportive melodic ideas.
Over a little more than a three-year period, I wrote twelve songs for this album, Galactic Rivers. Working alone felt a little strange but comfortable, not unlike a sax-playing robot passing time in a little ship somewhere in space. As is true with all musicians, the influences throughout our lives infiltrate what we do. In my case, a bit of prog rock always seemed to creep in before I realized it. “No worries,” the music seemed to say, “come on in.”
